Jazzie B helps young artists Get Ahead at the Hackney Empire
Award winning musician and producer Jazzie B of Soul II Soul met a young star of tomorrow at East London's Hackney Empire.
The two artists held a masterclass session to celebrate the opportunities young people are enjoying with the help of National Lottery funding in the area.
Renell Shaw (17) is part of the Get Ahead Artist Development Programme. The programme is the Lottery funded Hackney Empire's flagship intensive performing arts project. The 10-day project culminates in a professional performance by East London's most talented young performers.
Jazzie B sits on the Board of Directors at Hackney Empire, which received over £13 million in Lottery funding from Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore and upgrade the theatre complex. He has overseen the creation of London's most prestigious and innovative and respected education programmes, providing talented up-and-coming performers with the experience of a lifetime to work with well-established artists in a professional setting.
Jazzie said:
"It is great to see young people like Renell getting involved in something creative and channeling their energy positively. We are very proud of the work Hackney Empire has achieved with the help of the National Lottery and we hope we can continue changing the lives of East London's young people."
Since The National Lottery began in 1994, it has invested over £9 billion in children and young people. It has funded many projects, activities and events that have benefited the lives of East London's young people. The funding has transformed many local communities and has allowed children to actively learn and engage in everything from sport to heritage.
Get Ahead ADP is an intensive performing arts experience for forty up and coming singers, song-writers, musicians, dancers, comperes and comedians, made up of 12 -16 year olds from the east London area. All have expressed a gift or talent for the making and performing of music, song, dance and entertainment.
For every pound spent on The National Lottery, 28p goes to good causes.
