Foals @ Lennon's, Southampton
Review by Chris Waugh
It might seem as if there's a shampoo-boycott on stage tonight, but the local fashionistas out in force to see Foals and enjoy Lennon's grotty glamour and sliding scale of drinks prices have probably spent as much money on hairspray to maintain their perfectly Faris-esque barnets as they have dressing themselves.

Recently, Foals excellent math-pop-dance-rock formula has been unfairly sniped at for clambering eagerly aboard the runaway nu-rave bandwagon.
But it's a lazy criticism, since rather than put down the nu-rave handbook Foals have diligently stayed in, retyped and amended it; adding essential new chapters entitled 'More beats, bleeps and electronica', 'Weird, precisely warped guitar lines' and 'No f***ing day-glo gimmickry, here mate'.
And they are great.
So diminutive and unassuming though are the Oxford quintet that when they take to the stage long past midnight they look for all the world like lost chess club outing.
But great things come in little packages.
