Shout Out Louds - ‘Howl Howl Gaff Gaff’
'Howl Howl Gaff Gaff', the gloriously melodic debut album from Swedish indiepop faves Shout Out Louds, will be released in the UK, 19th September on EMI Records.
Following their recent performance at the 2005 Coachella Valley Music Festival, NME named Shout Out Louds "The best new band of the weekend…four sensitive boys and one ice-cute bombshell who sound like the Strokes, Belle & Sebastian and Bright Eyes rolled into one super-lush folk-pop sandwich." Dazed and Confused declared that Shout Out Louds are "Another sure sign that Scandinavia knows how to rock" and Clash described the album as "a crystalline and lavish pop record".
The band have recently toured the U.S with The Dears and The Futureheads and are now back on the road with Kings of Leon and Secret Machines. Shout Out Louds were recently featured in Rolling Stone's 2005 "Next List" as one of the most promising bands to watch this year. Time magazine called them "guaranteed to thrill" and CMJ praised them as "something magical." They also made their late night television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman on June 8th.
Starting out as a few old friends playing in a drafty Stockholm rehearsal space in 2002, recording 60s-era and American indie-inspired songs backed by a temperamental drum machine stuck on bossa nova, the band soon added a proper drummer and someone who actually knew how to play the Moog synthesizer they'd been toying with (they got lucky and recruited Bebban Stenborg - a classically-trained pianist with a Roky Erickson obsession).
Shout Out Louds gave their very first demos to a close friend who promptly started a record company to release them in Scandinavia, which led to a popular series of singles, EP's and the passionately received 'Howl Howl Gaff Gaff' album. The U.K. version of the album features five new songs, including tracks from the 2004 'Oh, Sweetheart' EP, new mixes and was produced by Ronald Bood and Bjorn Yttling with Shout Out Louds.
The title of 'Howl Howl Gaff Gaff' and accompanying sleeve image, comes from a drawing frontman Adam Olenius drew of two wolves howling at the top of their lungs (also where the band got their name). The "gaff gaff" part is basically Russian for "woof woof," so multilingual wolf/dogs is as good of an introduction as any.
