Andrea Corr chats to I Like Music

Andrea Corr - Shame On You single cover / Andrea Corr cooking at home

I learned so much from him. He has a different way of working than anyone else I've known and really brings the stories to life. He really listens to the lyrics, and I really like that, and he'll further emphasise what you're trying to say within it and just add to the whole picture of it, the whole scenario and the scene.

ILM: So he brings it to life?

ANDREA: Yeah he dramatises it, absolutely.

ILM: Your single, Shame On You (to keep my love from me) is out on June 18th. about conscription and war, " how these men and women who go off to war are leaving behind partners they will never marry and children they will never have." Can you tell us how the song came about and describe its whole vibe?

ANDREA: I had just read the book Bird Song by Sebastian Faulks, which is about war and obviously, it's so relevant today and pretty much every day. I didn't know I was writing about it when I started writing the song to be honest, as often happens with me, it just comes along and then I know what I'm writing about … I was, as everybody is, affected by photos you see in the papers of young people looking out in their uniforms and they've been killed, and that one person, the immense waste of it; gone in their 20s… the children they won't have and the husband or wife they've left behind or won't marry, and all the beautiful things in life that won't happen and the people affected by that, so it's really about the immense waste of war, it's just so sad.

ILM: It definitely is.

ILM: Now, in 12 years you and the rest of the Corrs have sold thirty million albums! - How much of a sense of achievement do you wake up with each day? And what ambitions do you still have to achieve?

ANDREA: With what the Corrs have done, I'm really proud of it and also as a family how we endured through it all, I'm really happy with that. With this record I feel, it wasn't easy for me to make the step to do it, and I felt it was more like fate in a way. Everybody in my family got pregnant and I didn't (I wasn't planning on it) and the record deal was offered to me. I could have left it and been content with everything and not done anything, but I always feel you've got to step out of your comfort zone and I definitely was stepping out of my comfort zone by doing a record on my own without the protection of the family Now I feel so happy with it, that I do feel fulfilled.
