Here's what Jake has to say:
On coming out
Jayne: When did you come out?
Jake: 15. It was the first year I smoked pot, people were drinking and doing drugs. I felt this moment of being a bit more free. I was getting into music, going to concerts a two hour ferry ride. I saw nirvana, faith no more - my all time favourite bands, at a Jesus Jones concert. I was experiencing these shows and 1 movie theatre on the island, a lot wasn't going on. My art teacher became my legal guardian and I lived in Arizona, she was pregnant and didn't know anything about raising a teenager and I got away with murder.
That was the year I came out and started being gay at school. Which is crazy. I was dressing really crazy, wearing plad skirts and leather. I was wearing anything I could find, anything I could get my hands on. I was the only kid at school. It was a heavy mormon population, people were really conservative. It was probably a mistake to come out at school. People started asking me and I would say yes.
